I grew up in a small Oklahoma town with a pretty typical family. Family vacations were always to places we could get to by driving because of the expense of air travel, so I have lots of memories of Texas and Missouri from my childhood. One memorable trip was in Dad's green truck, pulling a travel trailer, to North Padre Island. That was a long trip!
Road trips are fine, but air travel opened up a whole new world for me. At 16, I was given the opportunity to travel to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, with my high school Spanish club. My first flight was from Oklahoma City to Houston, where we connected on to Mexico. I remember that the international flight still allowed smoking...so different from today! I loved that we could get to a different country so quickly, and this was the start of my travel bug.
Since that trip to Mexico so many years ago, I've had several opportunities to travel with friends and colleagues. As a classroom teacher, school breaks offer travel time that I like to take advantage of, though I do wish I could travel off-peak more often for the savings. San Francisco, Chicago, Los Angeles, San Diego, Orlando, Las Vegas, Denver, Washington, D.C., New York City, and Philadelphia are just a few of the destinations I've visited for either teaching conferences or personal vacations. Two international trips, one to Germany and one to Japan, were made possible by Fund For Teachers, a private organization that awards grants for teacher travel and research. These trips are documented on other pages, and can be located
here (Germany) and
here (Japan). Whether for business or pleasure, I try to cram as much sight-seeing into every trip as possible!

In 2007, I began dating my now-husband. I told him early on in the relationship that travel was important to me, and we have always budgeted for it as though it was a monthly bill. We even used a travel theme as part of our wedding reception decor. I'm glad that I've been able to experience new locations with him with plans for even more adventures!

Diana and Johnnie are two of my other regular travel companions. The three of us used to carpool together years ago, and we would plan some pretty amazing trips while driving in the car! Now that we are all at different schools/cities and unable to see each other every day, we still try to plan at least one big "Girls" trip each year so we can stay connected. We are all huge Disney fans, so that is typically the focus of many of our adventures together. It's nice to travel with other people who appreciate the Disney magic!
